Twice a year, the National Bank of Belgium publishes its macroeconomic outlook for our country. During this exclusive webinar, Geert Langenus will guide you through the latest figures and forecasts for both the Belgian and European economies.

Introduction

In the previous outlook, economic growth for Belgium was still estimated at a modest 1%. But what does the economic picture look like today? What impact are rising geopolitical tensions, the conflict with Iran and rising energy prices having on growth, inflation and employment?

We will also take a closer look at the outlook for the Belgian budget. Is there finally light at the end of the tunnel?

    Geert Langenus obtained degrees in Economics from the University of Ghent and the Catholic University of Leuven. He joined the Economics and Research Department of the National Bank of Belgium where he first worked as a public finance expert focusing mostly on fiscal sustainability, structural budget balances and fiscal institutions. Afterwards he moved to a broader range of macroeconomic topics, including the coordination of the Bank’s biannual macroeconomic projections, the elaboration of nowcasting models and the analysis of the residential real estate market.

    He regularly appears in the Belgian media with his views on the Belgian economy. He has held different teaching positions (in the fields of macroeconomics, international economics, applied European policy and real estate markets) and is the author of several publications ranging from public finances to nowcasting. He has also been involved in various technical assistance projects (IMF, EC, OECD) in both Eastern Europe and the MENA region related to budgetary and economic policy as well as macroeconomic statistics.
